N.C. Firefighters Struck By Lightning now OK

They were treated at a hospital and released.

ARARAT, N.C. --

Firefighters in Surry County were struck by lightning Thursday night as they were responding to damage made by severe weather in the area.

Surry County officials said the had been handling calls throughout the evening relating to the severe weather that moved through.

Officials said there were three structure fires as a result of lightning strikes, and two firefighters at one of the scenes had been struck by lightning.

The firefighters went to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

County officials also reported numerous power lines and trees down, along with several flooded roads.

Surry County Systems Administrator Chris Stanley said crews responded to a call that a person was trapped in a greenhouse with rising water; however, before responders arrived, the person was able to escape with the help of family members.
