SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. --

Seven families are homeless this weekend after a early-morning apartment fire tore through an apartment building in downtown Sun Prairie.

The Sun Prairie fire department and nine other departments responded to the scene at 110 West Main Street at 1:34 a.m. Saturday morning.

When the crews arrived, three people were still trapped inside.

Steve Knaus, Sun Prairie Fire Chief, said, "Everybody was home. Everybody got out, except we had an elderly lady that could not get out, and a mother and her daughter, young daughter, which we rescued all three of them through windows."

Crews spent the rest of the night and morning putting the fire out.

Fortunately, there were no injuries, but seven apartments on the top floor of the building were determined to be a total loss.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
