CANTON, Ohio --

More than a dozen Canton firefighter cadets are out of a job.

The decision to lay off 15 cadets was made at a meeting late Friday morning after the city and the firefighters' union could not come to an agreement on possible cost-saving measures like minimum staffing and eliminating overtime.

Canton is facing a $1.6 million deficit. The 15 firefighters were hired a year ago and were on a probationary period.

Canton Mayor William Healy has said other layoffs are possible.
