The blaze destroyed a historic house.

LINDALE, Ga. --

Exploding ammunition hampered firefighters battling a massive fire that destroyed an historic home in Lindale late Sunday night.

Firefighters arrived at the scene on Booze Mountain Road at the intersection of Old Cedartown Road around 11:30 p.m. to find most of the old house on fire.

Crews had to keep their distance when they heard thousands of rounds of ammunition in the home exploding. The homeowner operated a gun shop and apparently stored some ammunition there

Firefighters were also hampered when a storm moved through the area, forcing them off ladders because of lightning.

The home was vacant at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.
