EAST HAMPTON, Conn. --

A firefighter was injured when the fire truck he was driving rolled over in East Hampton Thursday morning.

The truck rolled over on Hog Hill Road, off Route 16, East Hampton police said.

Officials said the truck was on its way back from a mutual aid call in Haddam Neck. They said the truck veered off the shoulder of Route 151 and into soft soil. The driver tried to correct the truck, but it overturned in the process, police said.

"He got sucked into the shoulder, he tried to correct it to get the truck out of the shoulder, and when he did, he over-corrected and the truck went into a spin on the roadway," said East Hampton Police Sgt. Garitt Kelly.

Police said two utility poles were downed in the crash.

The firefighter, who police identified only as a captain of the volunteer fire department, was taken to Hartford Hospital with head injuries. Police described the firefighter's injuries as minor.

Connecticut Light & Power said that 16 electrical customers were first affected by the downed poles. They said only five customers remained without power at 1 p.m.

The road remained was closed while the overturned firetruck was removed from the roadway. Police said traffic would be slow-going on the road during the evening commute while crews replaced the downed utility poles.
