BALTIMORE --

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fatal light rail crash in Baltimore County.

Transit officials said one teenage boy is dead and another is seriously injured. Both were found lying on the light rail tracks near the Lutherville station. The stop is in the 100 block of West Ridgely Road.

Maryland Transit Administration spokeswoman Jo Greene said it's unclear what happened to the boys.

She said a fare inspector on a northbound train spotted two people lying inside the southbound tracks at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday.

Baltimore County medics treated the victims at the scene.

The train stopped and the operator ran back to where the boys were lying, according to Greene.

One was taken to a local hospital, where he died. The other was airlifted to Shock Trauma.

Greene said the agency received no reports about a train striking anyone, and no trains showed any obvious signs that they had been involved in an accident.

She said investigators are looking at the undercarriages of trains for possible clues.
