One person is dead and another injured after a fire damaged an apartment building early Saturday morning.

Thirty-five firefighters responded to a fire at 4612 SE Manatee Lane in Port Salerno at 2:40 a.m. The two-story, six-unit building was engulfed in smoke and flames, according to a Martin County Fire Rescue report.

When the fire was under control and firefighters were able to enter the building, they found the deceased victim on the second floor. A second victim received emergency care at the scene and was transported to a local hospital, according to the report.

While the fire was contained to one unit, adjoining apartments received smoke damage, Jon Belding of the Martin County Fire Rescue said.
