MUNCIE, Ind. --
A firefighters union official said he's offended by comments by Muncie's mayor that firefighters left "filth" behind in a recently closed fire station.
Fire Union President Mike Whited said the firefighters did the best they could to clean up after themselves.
He said Station 1 was built more than 100 years ago and firefighters had only about two days to move out.
He faulted administrators for not having a strong plan for shutting the station down.
On Thursday, Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley said firefighters made a mess before they moved out.
She said "the filth was shocking" and showed a lack of discipline, leadership and respect.
There's no love lost between Muncie's firefighters and McShurley after the mayor recently laid off 32 firefighters, six police officers and closed two fire stations.
The mayor held a short public meeting last Thursday, but cut it short when she felt questions from the audience weren't respectful.
