LACONIA, N.H. --
Firefighters in Laconia rescued a teenage girl from the Winnipesaukee River Monday morning.
Fire Chief Kenneth Erickson said crews responded to the river off Main Street just before noon.
Erickson said a group of teenage girls were swimming in the river by the dam when they were swept away by the current. Three of the girls were able to get out of the river on their own, while one was swept downstream.
Erickson said the girl was able to grab a bridge support and hang on until fire crews launched an inflatable boat to get to her.
The girl was taken to Lakes Region Hospital for an ankle injury. Another girl was also taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
Erickson said the river current is strong due to all the rain the area has received.
