LOUISVILLE, Ky. --
The stormy weather left its mark on one Jefferson County home Monday morning.
Lightning struck a house on Routt Road
The Fern Creek fire chief said a man was sitting at home watching TV when he heard an unusual noise and decided to check it out.
He investigated it, found smoke and fire and called the fire department. We responded out, called two extra companies from Mount Washington, said chief Mike Schmidt.
Schmidt said his crew was called to the house on Routt Road around 11 a.m.
All three fire companies worked to get the fire under control, but their efforts could only save so much.
The home sustained heavy damage to approximately 50 percent of it, Schmidt said. The entire left side of the house and the roof section's gone in the back.
Schmidt said what they saw Monday is not unusual, but damage can vary greatly when a house is hit by lightning.
Normally it hits in the attic area. This particular case, he had a lot of storage in the attic, so that may have made the situation worse," said Schmidt.
The cleanup effort is under way and it will be a long time before this house will be back in working order.
The home will have to be rebuilt and inspected before they'll turn the power back on, said Schmidt.
The resident made it out of the home safely, but his dog is missing. The dog is a chocolate Labrador named Molly. If you have seen the dog, call 802-3662.
