DES MOINES, Iowa --

Des Moines firefighters battled a fire that spread to two buildings on Saturday evening.

Smoke could been seen from miles away as they worked to extinguish flames that ultimately destroyed an old eastside bar and an attached apartment complex at 1539 East Grand.

Capt. Steve Brown said both buildings were vacant and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
