CLERMONT, Ind. --
A 13-year-old boy died early Saturday after the family's Clermont home caught fire.
The fire started just before 8 a.m. at a mobile home at 10963 Horseshoe Drive, near U.S. 136 and Raceway Road in Hendricks County, said Brownsburg fire Lt. Ryan Miller.
When firefighters arrived, a man and a woman were outside the home, but they said their son was unable to escape.
The boy's body was later found in a back bedroom. He was pronounced dead.
Neighbors said they felt helpless as they watched the home burn.
"They were a good family. It's very sad and unfortunate. She was a loving mom," said family friend Stacey Hawkins.
His mother was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis with injuries sustained in the fire. Hawkins said the woman suffered burns to her face.
"They are going to keep her sedated for a few days and then, once she gets a little better, they'll tell her about her son's death," she said.
The boy's step-father was not injured in the fire.
Police had not released any names Saturday evening.
Miller said that this was the first fatal residential fire within Brownsburg fire's district since 1997.
