Nebraska Firefighters Rescue Boy
OMAHA, Neb. --
A 14-year-old boy was rescued from an apartment balcony Wednesday morning when smoke from a fire trapped him in the building.
Firefighters rushed to the scene near 93rd Plaza and Paddock Road after receiving a call that a person might be trapped.
The fire started in a trash can in the apartment building's laundry room. Ty Korf smelled the smoke, opened his front door, and saw a clouded hallway.
"I was really scared. I didn't know what was going on," Korf said.

Korf then ran to his balcony and yelled for help.
A maintenance worker spotted him. Jorge Calderon tried to enter the building. Smoke drove him back.
"I was really scared," Calderon said.
The heat in the building forced firefighters to extend ladders to the balcony, said firefighter Kevin Laughlin.
Korf descended the ladder, suffering only a 'tickling" in his throat. He was checked out at a hospital for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters also got Korf's cat out of the apartment. Korf said he no longer wants to stay home alone.
Firefighters said six units sustained smoke damage. They havent said what sparked the fire.
