LORAIN, Ohio --

A Lorain County father will have to perform community service after his son was injured by an exploding firework.

A judge said in court Thursday that she would make an example of John Buzek, whose 12-year-old son had part of his finger blown off, in hopes of reminding people how dangerous fireworks can be.

Teary-eyed an remorseful, Buzek said his family members' lives were changed forever earlier this month when his son lit a Roman candle firecracker and it exploded in his hand. They were fireworks that the elder Buzek bought.

"What was supposed to be a celebration has been the worst thing that has happened to us," said Buzek.

The police report said the tip of the boy's little finger is missing and he had third-degree burns on his palm.

Almost all fireworks are illegal in the state of Ohio, which is what law enforcement wants you to remember this Fourth of July.

But for the Buzek family, the Fourth of July will never be the same.

"When fireworks are shown on TV we have to look away or shut it off," Buzek said.

Buzek pleaded guilty in court. He was charged because his son is a minor.

Buzek faced a $400 fine and 30 days in jail. Instead, he will perform one day of community service.

"Fireworks should not be handled by anyone but the professionals," Buzek said. "Go to Edgewater, go to Clague Park, go watch the displays, but stay away from them."

Buzek said his son is doing much better, although loud bangs put the family on edge. He said the whole ordeal has practically torn his family apart but they are all beginning to heal.
