AURORA, Colo. -- A training exercise turned into a real rescue for Aurora firefighters when two members of the team fell in a canyon in Douglas County Tuesday afternoon.

Battalion Chief Mark Turley said the firefighters were practicing a technical rope rescue in the Castlewood Canyon when "the situation changed suddenly" and the two men were injured.

Turley said the accident is still under investigation, but said something happened to cause the firefighters to fall and slam into the rocks in the canyon.

One was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and released, Turley said.

The second firefighter had lacerations and a broken leg and will undergo surgery Tuesday night, he said.

"Fortunately they are both going to be fine," he said.

The two are members of the Aurora Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team.

Turley said this accident is the first for this remote training site.

Castlewood Canyon is about 45 minutes south east of Denver near Franktown.
