PITTSFIELD, N.H. --

Pittsfield fire officials said two people were killed in a fire early Monday morning.

The fire broke out at about 5:20 a.m. at an apartment building at 36 Main St. and quickly grew to three alarms. As of 8:30 a.m. Monday, crews were still at the scene and Main Street remained closed.

Pittsfield's fire chief said the bodies of the two victims were found on the second floor. Officials said when firefighters arrived, there was a lot of fire coming from the same floor. One neighbor who called 911 said he could hear people screaming inside.

Officials said there are four units in the apartment building but they were not sure if all of the units were occupied. An investigators from the state fire marshal's office was at the scene Monday morning, as the search began for the cause of the fire.

Pittsfield Middle High School was closed Monday because of a power outage caused by the deadly fire. The elementary school will remain open.
