CAPITOLA, Calif. --

Smoke covered the sky and the smell of melting plastics and sulfuric fumes filled the air after a fire broke out at a furniture store warehouse in Capitola on Sunday, fire officials said.

The fire broke near 41st Avenue at about 11:30 p.m., and the warehouse was gutted.

It took nearly five hours for firefighters to contain the blaze, which was located in the middle of a commercial district surrounded by a lumber yard, homes and restaurants, officials said.

Capitola firefighters were aided by fire crews from within the county to control of the blaze.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
