Deputy State Fire Marshals are investigating a fire that injured two people and a firefighter Monday morning.
The two-alarm, 5:47 a.m., fire occurred at 2823 Old Joppa Road.
More than 40 firefighters from Harford and Baltimore counties responded to the fire, which took more than an hour to bring under control. The fire caused an estimated $275,000 worth of damage to the ranch style home and its contents.
The occupant of the home, Elva J. Huggins, 74, was awakened after hearing the smoke alarm. She and a friend, Robert Carson Milam, 79, who was staying there were able to escape the fire. Both were taken, along with firefighter Erik Petersen, 36, to the John Hopkins Bay View Medical Center Burn Unit where they are being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. Their injuries are considered to be non-life threatening.
Deputy state fire marshals have determined the fire started in the rear center area of the home, but the cause remains under investigation. Numerous pets belonging to Huggins died in the fire.
