HOUSTON --
Identical twin toddlers died in a fire at their northeast Houston home early Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston firefighters battled flames at a duplex in the 1700 block of Sam Wilson Street near Hershe Street at about midnight.
Firefighters arrived at the home about 1 minute after they were called because a station is just down the street.
"There was fire coming out the front window, front door of this house when they got here," District Chief Tommy Dowdy said.
A resident made it out of the home and told firefighters that the children were inside.
"Once we got inside, knocked the fire down and did a primary search, there is indeed two fatalities inside the house," Dowdy said. "Two children."
Officials said they believe the children were about 18 months old. Their names have not been released.
"I don't have a cause with fatalities," Dowdy said "It will be a little slow coming out with a cold snap, and this being the first cold snap of the year, it (a space heater) could very well be a definitive possibility."
