EAST POINT, Ga. --
Some East Point firefighters spent the weekend cleaning out their lockers, instead of fighting fires.
"It's a sad day, very sad day. Cleaning out my locker and saying goodbye to co-workers," said Paul Douglas, a captain with the East Point Fire Department.
Douglas is anticipating a pink slip, as the city of East Point moves to take a $4 million bite out of a $5 million deficit. Several firefighters were laid off Saturday, with more layoffs expected Sunday.
"I feel like I'm paying for someone else's mistakes," said Douglas. Fire stations No. 1 and 5 are both slated to close their doors for good.
Douglas, a 26-year veteran, said he doesn't expect to receive severance or retirement pay.
But firefighters aren't the only ones affected by the cuts. The city of East Point also plans to furlough every city worker to take one unpaid day off every two weeks.
