FDNY Firefighters Battle Blaze at Station

Five firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Some Harlem firefighters found themselves battling flames in their own firehouse last night (Nov. 28).

Firefighters from Engine 80 Ladder 23 in Harlem were responding to another fire in the area when flames broke out at their own house shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire, but say it does not appear suspicious.

"The firehouse is over 100 years old, so it has 100-year-old electrical wiring," said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief James Manahan. "There were no previous problems with the firehouse and the units that responded were met with extreme fire conditions when they did arrive."

Five firefighters suffered minor injuries.

"I'm very worried because this fire station, I'm living here for 37 years, so I know some of the firemen. I'm worried for our neighborhood that we don't have a fire station and we need it," said local Maria Fernandez.

It is still not clear how much damage the fire caused, but the firefighters assigned to the house will work elsewhere for now.
