HONOLULU --

Honolulu firefighters rescued two homeless men early on Monday morning after floodwaters trapped them for more than two hours under a Pauoa bridge.

The homeless men were sleeping under a bridge on Nu'uanu Avenue and Pau'oa Road near Kawananakoa Middle School. They woke up to a raging river beside them.

Firefighters got the call at about 2 a.m. They hooked up the men to safety harnesses and plucked them out one at a time.

Blane Baker said he thought he and Mark Garcia could have been washed away. He said he saw his life flash before his eyes.
