CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. --

A 33-year-old man was found dead Friday inside a Citrus Heights apartment after a fire broke out, officials said.

The blaze was reported shortly after 9 a.m. in unit 34 of the Foxborough Apartments at 7795 Antelope Road.

Neighbors said they did not hear a smoke alarm, and firefighters said they did not find one inside.

Fire officials said the blaze was especially intense.

"It was very hot, very untenable for anyone to survive short of firemen in proper protective gear," said Jeff Lynch of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

So far, the cause of the fire and the victim's identity haven't been released.
