Chesterfield, Virginia Haz Mat Handles Diesel Fuel Spill

Dec. 21, 2007

Dawn's early light saw Chesterfield firefighters already in action as they were toned out around 0600 to a fuel spill.

Engine 17 answered the call for a possible fuel spill on Jeff Davis Highway near Kingsdale Road on Dec 21.

Arriving on scene, the first report confirmed a fuel tank in the road spilling diesel fuel across two highway lanes. With nearby storm drains, a strong fuel odor in the air and a motel full of occupants nearby, Engine 17 requested the assistance of the Haz Mat team.

Haz Mat 15 was dispatched to the large spill.

Chesterfield County police established a perimeter around the spill and had the two affected lanes closed so crews could work.

Haz Mat requested the assistance of VDOT who responded with a dump truck load of absorbant material. A team from Woodfin Oil Company, whose truck lost the fuel tank and caused the spill, arrived on scene and under the supervision of Chesterfield's crews began clean up.

Engine 17 was released back into service and Haz Mat 15 followed shortly thereafter.

No injuries were reported and the storm drains were protected by the quick work of crews.
