CHICKASHA, Okla. --

An 11-year-old boy started a fire that destroyed an abandoned Chickasha school, investigators said.

The Oklahoma state fire marshal said the boy is with his parents while investigators interview other people of interest. Authorities said he admitted to setting some trash on fire inside the old Intermediate School.

Agency officials said they plan to recommend to local authorities that the boy be placed in some kind of program that deals with juveniles starting fires.

Officials said the building was vacant at the time of the blaze, and the utilities were turned off.

"It's hard to believe because I remember going to school here so much that it's kind of tear-dropping," said Paul Bottoms.
