PITTSBURGH --
A volunteer firefighter made a daring rescue Tuesday, but it was nowhere near a fire.
Authorities said a driver apparently fell asleep in Beaver County, clipped a pickup truck and careened 75 feet off an overpass.
A volunteer at a nearby gas station saw the whole thing, and also noticed that the car came to a rest on some railroad tracks.
Chief Mark Stowe said the firefighter leapt into action and pulled the injured driver from the car just before a train plowed into the wreck.
"Approximately one to two minutes after the gentleman was out of the vehicle, the train struck and pushed the vehicle north... Three to four football fields from where he struck the vehicle," said Stowe.
The car was reduced to a mass of mangled metal and the driver was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital.
