OMAHA, Neb. --

About 50 firefighters responded Tuesday morning to a two-alarm blaze in an apartment building under renovation near 27th Street and Dewey Avenue.

One firefighter fell through a floor when it gave out. The firefighter landed on his feet and suffered no major injuries, said Capt. James Gentile.

The firefighter fell as he was "sounding" the floor -- checking it for stability with an ax. Gentile didn't know if the fire weakened the floor or if it was already compromised.

The firefighter's partners sent a mayday call when he fell. Crews responded according to an emergency plan and treated him at the scene.

Gentile said crews were battling the fire while working around numerous holes in the floors.

Witnesses told KETV reporter Jeff Van Sant that flames were first seen coming from the building's basement. By 9:20 a.m., witnesses said the flames could be seen in a second-floor window.
