GREENVILLE, Ohio --
Smoke is the leading cause of residential deaths, according to the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office. With that in mind, firefighters in Greenville launched a smoke detector giveaway this week to those residents living within the city limits of Greenville who do not have working smoke alarms.
"This is on a first-come, first-served basis," said firefighter Mike King. "Due to the generous donations from the Woodland Heights Primary School PTO, Ace Hardware of Greenville, and Studio One Hair Design, we will be able to distribute a total of 100 smoke detectors to residents of Greenville."
Those people needing a smoke detector will first need to fill out a brief application form. The forms are available by calling the Greenville Fire Department at 548-3040, or by stopping by the office of the fire chief in the Greenville Municipal Buliding at 100 Public Square.
"Smoke detectors do save lives," said Greenville Fire Chief Mark Wolf.
Last year, more than 14,000 Ohio families found out firsthand the devastation that fire can cause, and it happened in the place they feel the safest: their home.
Fire officials recommend that people test their smoke alarms monthly, change the batteries twice a year, and replace their smoke detectors if they are more than 10 years old.
