DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. --

Dearborn Heights firefighters battled a car fire at a gas station Wednesday around 2:30 a.m.

Officials said a black Pontiac Grand Am burst into flames after hitting a gas pump at a Shell station at Ford Road and Telegraph Road in Dearborn Heights.

The gas pump had an automatic shut-off which prevented it from exploding, officials said.

Firefighters said it was primarily a car fire. The gas pump was knocked over. The area around the pump was singed.

Two men were inside the car. Police said they took off after the accident but were caught a short time later.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into police custody on suspicion of drunken driving.

Police said the other man had several outstanding warrants.

The clerk at the gas station said it was very scary.

"It was a big fire. When you look up, it was all dark. We are really so lucky because it's gas," said Islam Shawakha.

There were no injuries.
