ALEXANDRIA, Ind. --

A 2-year-old boy was killed and four family members were injured in a fire at their Madison County duplex on Sunday.

The boy, Bryden Tracey, was pronounced dead at Community Hospital after firefighters doused the blaze.

Two more children, ages 4 and 15 days, were transported by medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children, in Indianapolis. Their names were not immediately released.

The childrens' parents, Erin Williams, 27, and Barry Tracey, 27, were transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital. Williams, Tracey and the 4-year-old child were listed in critical condition Sunday night.

It wasn't immediately clear how long the fire might have been smoldering before it was discovered by two passers-by, Gary Wisler and Darryl Adams.

"I consider them heroes. They noticed it, then attempted a rescue but the flames were just too hot and they had to back out," said Alexandria Fire Chief Bruce Waters.

Neighbors told 6News' Tanya Spencer that they heard an explosion and knew the outcome was going to be bad from what they saw.

"I went back to church because everything, I thought, was under control," said Ralph Patterson. "When I got back home from church, they were carrying another little child out.'

The family had just moved into the duplex about two weeks ago. According to neighbors, a sixth family member, the couple's oldest daughter, escaped because she was away from home for the night.

Waters said there were smoke alarms in the home, but it was not known whether they were working.

The fire's cause remains under investigation, but investigators ruled out arson.
