Nebraska Fire Victim Dies; Wife Recovers
OMAHA, Neb. --
A man who suffered serious burns in a weekend house fire has died.
Emiliano Gomez, 50, died on Thursday morning, according to University of Nebraska Medical Center spokesman Paul Baltes. Gomez's wife, Elva Gomez, 44, is in fair condition.
Thirty-five firefighters responded to the blaze near 25th and Poppleton streets Saturday night. They arrived to find neighbors screaming and people trapped inside.
A neighbor was injured when trying to rescue a child from the fire. Three adults and four children were taken to the hospital on Saturday and released.
Omaha Fire Department Capt. James Gentile told KETV NewsWatch 7 on Wednesday that house had working smoke detectors.
The day after the fire, rescuers described how they attacked the fire.
One crew attacked the fire from outside while another used infrared cameras to find victims inside the house.
Investigators estimated the damage at $55,000. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
