JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
No will be charged in a collision between a truck and a fire engine that injured four firefighters two weeks ago, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Engine 51 was headed to a mobile home fire with lights and siren on Jan. 3. As the fire engine was passing stopped traffic at the intersection of Philips Highway and Southside Boulevard, it was struck by a commercial truck.
The fire engine rolled over and landed on its side.
"The driver of the truck failed to observe the fire truck approaching," Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper said at the time. "The fire truck came through the intersection, swerved, tried to go around that vehicle, clipped the right side of it, caused the driver of the fire truck to lose control."
Four firefighters were hospitalized. Rookie Shawn Hall, 27, suffered serious injures and remains in rehabilitation.
The driver of the second truck, John Patterson, 43, was not hurt.
After investigating the incident, the FHP concluded that both Patterson and Engineer Michael Sparks, who was driving the fire engine, contributed to the crash. According to the report, Patterson had a green light, but should have yielded to the emergency vehicle.
Investigators also said that while Sparks did not legally have to stop the fire engine at the red light, he should have slowed down to make sure the intersection was clear. Troopers said the engine was going 45 mph at the time of the crash.
