Hazmat Situation Shuts Down I-95 in Virginia

The hazmat response was caused by leakage from a tractor trailer.

STAFFORD, Va. (WUSA) - Interstate 95 southbound in Stafford County is currently shut down due to a hazmat situation. . The hazmat response was caused by leakage from a tractor trailer - not an accident.

Virginia State Police cannot say at this time exactly what kind of material has been spilled but the trailer did contain various chemicals. Hazmat is on the scene.

Motorists are advised to be patient and take alternate routes if at all possible. Police say motorists should exit 95-S at Exits 140 and 143 and utilize Route 1.

Officials on the scene are working to minimize possible environmental impact, impact on the surrounding community, as well as impact on rush hour traffic.
