DUNCAN, S.C. --
Mondays train derailment was the latest emergency call for weary firefighters from the Duncan Fire Department.
The Spartanburg County squad's busy week began last Sunday with a huge fire at the former Jackson Mill sites.
But rather than getting a break after the mill fire was brought under control, the calls kept on coming and have not slowed down.
Many of the firefighters spent their day Monday asleep on couches in the fire station's break room.
One firefighter said that his colleagues were too tired to walk the few additional feet to their bunkroom.
Many of the firefighters worked almost around the clock on the Jackson Mill fire until this weekend.
A few hours after they left the site of the mill fire, they were called out to a house fire in Duncan.
Then early Sunday morning, the station was called to the scene of the train derailment.
"Well we're a pretty busy department when it comes to structure fires," Duncan Fire Chief Barry Frost said. "We probably have 30 structure fires a year. It's kind of unusual having the call volume we've had the last couple of weeks, especially starting July."
After returning from the derailment, firefighters said that they were hoping the alarm remains silent for a few days.
Frost said that he is heading for an overdue vacation at the beach and the rest of the department is hoping they can catch up on some of their sleep.
