GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. --

A 3-year-old boy was killed late Monday afternoon as a fire destroyed a Green Cove Springs home.

Police were called to the fire at 809 Pine St. at about 5:50 p.m. They said when they arrived at the scene, the house was fully engulfed with flames.

Firefighters used infrared equipment to find 3-year-old Ethan Kirkland.

The child was pulled from the home and flown to Shands-Gainesville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 7 p.m.

Ethan's grandmother and two of his siblings were in the backyard pool when the fire sparked, according to authorities.

The fire marshal was unable to immediately investigate the cause of the fire because of the bad weather. The scene was secured and the investigation is expected to be continued on Tuesday.
