DETROIT --

Residents jumped from windows to escape an apartment complex fire on Philadelphia Street on Detroits west side.

A fire broke out on the fourth floor of an apartment complex and some desperate residents tied bed sheets together to escape the blaze, according to fire officials.

Detroit firefighters said the stairwell and elevators filled with smoke and some residents had no other choice but to jump out of the windows to escape.

I seen people jumping off the top floors," said Nakita Neil, after escaping the fire. It was just so crazy because the fire was so small at first.

Four or five senior citizens were taken to Henry Ford Hospital and are being treated for injuries due to the fall and smoke inhalation.

The fire is now under control and a full investigation into how the fire started is under way.

I really think it was one of the neighborhood kids, because they always do little stuff to our building, said Neil. But it has never been so serious.
