WINTER PARK, Fla. --
A wheelchair-bound man narrowly escaped a fast-moving fire that quickly spread throughout his home minutes after he tried to heat the structure.
Firefighters responded to flames shooting from the roof of a home located at 308 Lake Fair Lane in Winter Park.
The disabled man said he tried to extinguish the fire Sunday night but when flames continued to grow out of control, he left the house.
Orange County firefighters arrived and knocked the fire down in minutes.
Officials said the cause of the fire appears to be a faulty heating element inside the home's air conditioning unit.
"I'm pretty sure its the air conditioning unit but we are still preliminary in our investigation. But everything points to that," Orange County firefighter Tom Hickman said. "I would say as far as structurally, the house is good. The roof in certain areas is gone and a lot of the interior has been damaged."
There were no injuries in connection with the fire.
