BLADENSBURG, Md. --

A Bladensburg firefighter was seriously injured on Monday when he fell from a moving fire engine that was responding to a call, fire officials said.

The firefighter was thrown from the vehicle at about 1:30 p.m. when it turned a corner from Edmonston Road onto Annapolis Road, according to fire spokesman Mark E. Brady.

The firefighter, a man in his 20s, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby trauma center where he is being evaluated, Brady said.

The crew of five firefighters from Bladensburg Fire/EMS Station 809 was responding to 5461 Madison Way for a report of smoke in an apartment building hallway.

Other fire and EMS officials responded to the incident. Fire officials said a group of juveniles had discharged a dry chemical extinguisher.
