INDIANAPOLIS --

A woman was killed and her son was injured in a house fire on Indianapolis' east side early Friday morning.

The man was outside when firefighters arrived at the home in the 1500 block of North Rural Street at about 2:45 a.m.

He told them he tried to get his mother, Beverly Clark, 61, out of the home but was not able to. Firefighters said she was confined to a wheelchair.

Clark's son told firefighters that he eventually ran out of the house to save himself.

The man was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital suffering from burned hands and smoke inhalation.

With the fire station only a few blocks from the scene of the fire, firefighters were able to put the blaze out quickly.

Investigators said they think Clark was smoking in bed and ignited an oxygen tank.
