Michigan Department Looking for Yet Another Chief

The City of St. Joseph is now looking for another fire chief after the third chief quit on Tuesday.

The city has now had a total of four chiefs in two months.

The first chief was originally laid off because of budget cuts back in December and after that three others quit.

The city manager says they are looking for a chief that will be willing to raise the level of services the fire department provides.

Meanwhile the union president says they are willing to work with the city and go through extra training. Now they just need to find a chief that can fit the job description.

"We tried to combine the police and fire chief position, our first move, but there didn't seem to be cooperation. It wasn't there for a police chief to be successful so then we went to a police sergeant and he was experienced, he was actually a firefighter, and I don't think he received cooperation," says St. Joseph City Manager Frank Walsh.

The chief that quit recently told the city manager he wasn't happy with a couple of things.

He didn't like a new policy that doesn't allow firefighters to take the fire truck to the grocery store.

Plus he didn't want the department to help out with a new water rescue team.

The city plans to appoint an interim chief, re-evaluate the position and hopefully appoint a new chief permanently.
