CHARLOTTE, N.C. --

Fire crews had to free a driver caught in the wreckage of his van in uptown Charlotte early Monday.

Investigators said the driver hit a tree on North Tryon Street head-on, and the engine compartment trapped the driver's legs. Firefighters had to work quickly because the engine caught fire after the crash.

"One crew of firefighters worked to stretch a hose line and keep the fire conditions off the injured driver while other firefighters worked to cut free the injured driver," said Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Rob Brisley.

Crews were able to free the driver in about 20 minutes, but North Tryon Street had to be shut down for about an hour.
