DES MOINES, Iowa --

A man was trapped in his smashed car for about 30 minutes Thursday morning.

Firefighters cut him out of the vehicle just after 10:30 a.m. The man was rear-ended by a silver sedan while driving in the southbound lane of Interstate 35. It happened at the 100 mile marker, about 2 miles south of the Huxley exit.

A state patrol troop at the scene told KCCI that the driver may have been distracted by his phone when just before the accident happened. The trooper said the driver may have been texting or reading e-mails.

The driver of the silver sedan was not hurt.

The driver of the other car, a man in his mid-50s, was taken to Mercy Medical Center to be treated for minor head and neck injuries.  His name and condition are not yet available.
