EDGEWATER, Fla. --

One man and his dog died in a house fire on Thursday morning in Volusia County.

The fire, which was reported shortly before 8 a.m., was on South Cory Drive in Edgewater.

Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach and Volusia County firefighters responded. When they arrived, a concrete addition in the rear of the house was fully involved in flames.

When the fire was doused, the man's body was found near the rear of the home. His dog also was found dead.

Authorities suspected that the victim wasnt sleeping. The room where he was found was not a bedroom and, according to neighbors, he may have physically not been able to escape.

Neighbors reported that the man was disabled and had a lot of medical problems. He has been in and out of the hospital recently a few times.

Authorities have not released the victim's name yet because they are still trying to notify the next of kin.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
