MIAMI --

After hundreds of people lined up to apply for Miami firefighter positions on Monday, the city has extended the deadline to apply for the openings.

More than 1,000 people showed up Monday morning at the city's administration building to put in their applications for 35 firefighter positions. The city planned to accept only 750 applications, and there were many more people who wanted to apply.

On Thursday, the city announced that it would accept additional applications, without a maximum limit, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Feb. 9-13 and Feb. 17-20.

In a news release Thursday, city officials said the city manager made the decision after some applicants were concerned that they did not get a fair chance to apply. Officials said they want to make sure the process is fair for all the applicants.

The original 750 applications will still be processed, and those prospective employees do not need to reapply, officials said.

The city will accept only one application per person, but a candidate can send someone else to apply on his or her behalf.
