Child Killed, Another Missing in Virginia Fire

FRONT ROYAL, Va. --

A child died in a fire at a Front Royal home early Thursday.

The fire was reported at about 4:35 a.m. Police officers arrived at 1352 John Marshall Highway to find the two-story home engulfed in flames. Firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze.

Eight people were home at the time of the fire, police said. Six of the occupants escaped, but two children, Madison Cook, 8, and Stevie Cook, 4, were unaccounted for, police said.

A body was recovered at the scene, police said. It is unclear which girl's body it is and which girl is unaccounted for.

Melissa Cook, 40, and Steven Cook, 32, were flown to the Washington Hospital Center, where they are in stable condition.

Brandi Hartman, 20, and Justin Cook, age unknown, were treated for smoke inhalation and minor abrasions and released from Warren Memorial Hospital.

Jacqueline Morton, 40, and Lillie Jenkins, 11, escaped without injury.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Loyal Order of the Moose No. 829 is collecting donations for the Cook family at the Moose Lodge at 1340 John Marshall Highway during normal business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 a.m. Donations also can be mailed to P.O. Box 95, Front Royal, Va., 22630.
