According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments across the U.S. responded to nearly 400,000 home fires in 2006. With that being said, this year's theme for Fire Prevention Week is "It's Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!"
From Oct. 5 to Oct. 11, fire safety advocates will be urged to spread the word to their communities about how to prevent the leading causes of home fires. There include fires caused by cooking, heating, electrical and smoking-materials.
NFPA has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922.
According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, it is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925.
