CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. --

Officials in Clayton County said a fire department applicant is dead after completing an agility test at the fire training center in Riverdale.

The incident happened Friday as 100 applicants took part in the test. The 28-year-old man, a former athlete originally from Florida, completed the test in the top 20 percent. He later complained of leg cramps and breathing problems.

Authorities said the man died at the hospital 12 hours later.

"I can't answer as to what happened. I wish I knew but I don't," said Clayton County Fire Chief Alex Cohilas.

Officials said they are now awaiting the results of an autopsy. Medical tests have ruled out heart attack or stroke. The man's family does not want his name released.
