CHICAGO --

A firefighter was injured battling a blaze in the attic of an abandoned house overnight on the Far South Side that police believe was intentionally set.

About 12:11 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire in the attic of a 1 1/2-story building at 11735 S. Sangamon St., according to Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight.

The fire was in an abandoned house, Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

A firefighter suffered a back injury while battling the blaze and was taken in fair condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Knight said.

Knight said the fire was extinguished about 12:45 a.m. and police and fire crews were gone from the scene by about 1:30 a.m., according to the Bomb and Arson Unit detective.

An accelerant, possibly gasoline, was found at the scene, leading investigators to believe the fire was intentionally set, the detective said.

No other injuries were reported.
