HOLYOKE, Mass. --

A 4-year-old child was killed and three others were hospitalized after flames raced through a Holyoke home Thursday night.

NewsCenter 5's Steve Lacy reported that the fire started just after 7 p.m. on Beech Street.

A 1-year-old was also critically injured and airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

A 6-year-old child and an adult were also hurt and were being treated at Bay State Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

None of their names have been released.

Neighbors said they were alerted to the fire by screams.

"I heard, 'Fire, fire,' and so I ran out. There were two kids I'd seen that got rushed out, they were badly burned," one witness said.

"We had a mattress fire on a second-floor, right, apartment. And apparently one of the people that were in the house rescued three other younger kids," another witness said.

Firefighters said it appears children were playing with matches and sparked the fire.

The state fire marshal's office and state police were investigating.
