SAN ANTONIO --

An off-duty San Antonio firefighter is being credited with preventing a home from burning to the ground.

Capt. Glen Hamilton broke the front door of a home in the 4100 block of Springview on the city's southeast side after he spotted smoke coming from the residence, said Paul Vidal, a district chief with the San Antonio Fire Department.

Hamilton conducted a primary search of the home and then called 911, Vidal said.

Firefighters arrived and quickly put out the fire, which caused an estimated $40,000 in damage.

Vidal said it appears a heater in the attic ignited the blaze.
